Animals remind us that we are not the only show in town. Maya
A long time ago, the wolf and hunting man worldwide enjoyed something approaching symbiosis, whereby the existence of each benefited the existence of the other. After a passage of time, the so-called civilised man eventually succeeded in totally wiping out the real wolf from his collective mind. We have doomed the wolf not for what it is, but for what we deliberately and mistakenly perceive it to be: the mythical epitome of a savage, ruthless killer which is, in reality, no more than the reflected image of ourselves. We have made it the scapewolf for our own sins.
The truth of the matter is that we do not know the four legged creatures we live with, because if we did, they would be genuinely happy, and happiness means equilibrium – in their bodies, in their minds and in their environments. It is time to give up the role as a static observer and to begin seriously studying the animals in our life. In a sense, we have to become selfless and look at what their primary needs are and fulfill them, so we can go open-minded into their world and learn to see and know them, not for what they are supposed to be, but for what they actually are.
To create a healthy body we need to be curious, we need to get familiar and passionate, to wish to go beyond our limited view of ourselves. This analogy applies to our furry friends and, much time and energy are needed. We need to work on ourself in a way that makes sense to this body and we have to behave in a way that makes sense to an animal, to find an appropriate way to communicate so we can feel an endless connection, a meeting place where there is respect. A structure of some kind is needed so our dog or cat can relate to us at all times and feel safe
They are much more than a commodity, much more than a recycle bin – like this body – they are great teachers – a gift – they can show us how far off the mark we have drifted: George is an African dog known as the mascot; wherever I go he goes and wherever he goes I do not go.
Dogs and cats are first and foremost animals, we need to understand their language, it takes time, energy and a great deal of effort and patience to research, assimilate, reflect upon and apply that knowledge. Through this process of learning, we have the good fortune to look at our mirror which is the animal in our life.. move our ego out of the way in order to acknowledge our short comings and, realign oneself accordingly – we owe them that much. In my humble opinion, this is what it takes and much more to create a bond not just owning an animal. Ultimately, we do not own anything.
